The Platoma Estate olive grove in Ermionida, Greece

Platoma Estate / Ermionida

The land behind the name.

01 / The inheritance

Several small pieces of land. One family story.

The olive grove behind Platoma Estate is made up of small plots across Ermionida. Land was often held this way here. In earlier generations, these plots were used mainly to graze the sheep that supported our family.

The land passed from my great-grandparents to my grandfather, then to my father, and eventually to my sister and me. Today I lease my sister's plots and care for the whole grove myself. I hope my three daughters will carry that care forward.

02 / Platoma

A place before a label.

Platoma is the area where our largest property lies. It began with a plot belonging to my grandfather. An adjoining plot was bought with my mother's dowry, and my father later made two further purchases. Together they formed a property of about 30 stremmas, or three hectares.

After my grandfather retired, he still kept a few sheep there. I remember going to help him graze them. That memory is part of why Platoma means more to me than a name on a bottle.

03 / The work

Care measured in seasons.

For me, Ermionida is defined by its exceptional climate and by the meeting of mountains and sea. I care for the grove myself throughout the year, from pruning and improving the soil to everything the plots need before harvest. Harvest is the only time I bring in workers.

I am trying to follow the principles of regenerative agriculture, with the aim of gradually restoring the ecosystem across the plots. It is ongoing work, grounded in what the land needs each year.

04 / The oil

Why I gave it a name.

Our production was never systematically organised for trade. The traditional local olive variety remained in the grove. Its yield is modest, making it less suited to commercial volume, but it gives an oil with a distinctive character.

We kept producing it. I wanted to give that oil its own identity, to bring out the value of what our land produces. That identity took the name of the place where I grew up helping my grandfather: Platoma.
